When a friend brought Robert Wogan aboard the SS United States, he was immediately awestruck. “It felt like a crime to me that this ship was sitting here whiling away,” he told a reporter from Almanac Weekly. The intention behind “United Radiance” was to illuminate the ship’s stack so they would appear as they had at night during a voyage. On July 4th, 1999, Wogan and his crew hauled generators and other equipment aboard and lit up the stacks. Then, in 2008, Wogan was asked to recreate “United Radiance” for the acclaimed documentary “Lady in Waiting.” Wogan says he sees the installation as “a beacon…I wanted it to be known that this ship was there.”To read the Almanac Weekly article on “United Radiance,” click here.
