The SS United States has issued a $500,000 emergency fundraiser to rehome America’s flagship. The SS United States has been docked at Pier 82 in Philadelphia since 1996.

The SS United States Conservancy has recently launched an urgent effort to raise $500,000 to try to save the 1942-built SS United States. According to the not-for-profit organization, the resources will be used to help cover the costs of the ship’s potential relocation and other critical expenses.

In its day, the SS United States was a nautical marvel, the fastest passenger liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a record time that has stood for more than 70 years. It was also hailed as an engineering masterpiece, designed in close cooperation with the U.S. Navy as a potential troop ship in the event of a war.
