The SS United States Conservancy has recently launched an urgent effort to raise $500,000 to try to save the 1942-built SS United States. According to the not-for-profit organization, the resources will be used to help cover the costs of the ship’s potential relocation and other critical expenses.

It was also hailed as an engineering masterpiece, designed in close cooperation with the U.S. Navy as a potential troop ship in the event of a war.
