The SS United States, America’s Flagship, arrived in Mobile, Alabama today after an approximately 1,800-mile tow from her berth in Philadelphia. The iconic national symbol and last surviving American ocean liner will now undergo preparations for her deployment as the “World’s Largest Artificial Reef” off Florida’s Gulf Coast near Destin-Fort Walton Beach.

The Maritime Executive: Settlement of Pier Dispute Clears Way for SS United States to be Reefed

The SS United States Conservancy has reached a settlement with Penn Warehousing & Distribution the company that controls the Philadelphia pier where the once famed ocean liner has sat for nearly 30 years. As part of the terms of the settlement, the title to the ship will be transferred in the coming days to Okaloosa County, Florida which is proceeding with its plans to sink the vessel to become the world’s largest artificial reef.

The SS United States will go forward to Florida to become the world’s largest artificial reef, after terms between the nonprofit overseeing the ship and Penn Warehousing and Distribution, the operators of the Philadelphia pier where the ship has been docked since 1996, have reached a settlement.
