The Officers’ Quarters

The sports deck, directly beneath the wheelhouse, provided staterooms for the top-rank deck officers. The master’s reception room was amidships, with his private quarters to starboard and the executive officer’s office and quarters to port. Behind that were quarters for radiomen on the starboard side. Down the centerline was the deck officer’s lounge, quarters for the master’s steward, and some other junior deck officers. Staterooms for other ranking officers were to port. The officer’s promenade was directly in front of and below the wheelhouse. In order to man the Radio Room and Wheelhouse 24 hours a day, officers would work in 4 hours shifts with 8 hours off, hence the triple redundancy of the officers.
