Discovering America’s flagship through prints, posters, and advertisements
“The Unrushables or, how to take a holiday from hurry,” Commissioned by United States Lines, August 12, 1967, The New Yorker
SS United States Conservancy Curatorial Collection
Offering a more modern take on who might travel aboard the SS United States, The Unrushables pictured women in jeans or short skirts rather than the more demure looks of the 50s. However, People of Color were still left out of this narrative. According to this ad, “unrushables” could span “undergrads to heads of state,” leaving out some who couldn’t access these positions. By looking closely at who is represented and how, we can form a bigger picture of just who could fit and afford the status of being “unrushable.”
