(PHILADELPHIA, PA) – As the nation reflects on the one-year anniversary of the major public health restrictions implemented to address the COVID-19 pandemic, the SS United States Conservancy, the non-profit dedicated to preserving America’s Flagship, will light the iconic symbol of our nation red, white and blue as a tribute to all those who have helped battle the deadly virus. SS United States Conservancy President Susan Gibbs offered the following statement:
“The SS United States has always been viewed as a reflection of her nation’s unconquerable spirit. America’s Flagship is a symbol of what we can achieve when we work together toward a common goal. Optimism, strength, ambition, and innovation defined the creation of SS United States. During this time of unprecedented challenges, our nation has yet again embraced those values and persevered against seemingly insurmountable odds.”
“In lighting the ship, the Conservancy salutes all frontline workers, first responders, public health professionals and everyone who has stepped up to help their neighbors and serve their communities over the last year. So many have demonstrated the power and resiliency of our nation. Like our flagship, we will continue to chart a forward course with strength, speed, and grace.”

About the SS United States.
The SS United States debuted in 1952 as the most powerful, modern, and advanced passenger liner ever built, smashing the transatlantic speed record on her maiden voyage using only two-thirds of her power– a record she still holds. Made with products and components from every state in the nation, the SS United States was a global ambassador and pinnacle of mid-century maritime design. Behind her graceful lines and patriotic flair, she was a national security asset, capable of transporting 14,000 troops 10,000 miles without refueling. Despite being withdrawn from service in 1969, the SS United States remains structurally sound to this day – a testament to the design, materials and workmanship that made her one of the greatest passenger liners of all time and an enduring symbol of the best of the American spirit.
