The contention arose after an unannounced doubling of the ship’s berth rent in Philadelphia in 2021, from $850 to $1,700 per day, leading to a pile-up of back rent. The SS United States Conservancy, the custodian of the ship, has steered the issue to court, seeking to navigate the debt waters and secure the vessel’s future.
