US District Court Senior Judge Anita Brody ruled today that the SS United States’ landlord, Penn Warehousing, could not double dockage fees without notice in its effort to force “America’s Flagship” from Pier 82 in Philadelphia. However, the Court also directed the irreplaceable national symbol to vacate the premises by September 12, 2024.
Conservancy President Susan Gibbs was recently honored by the National Maritime Historical Society. Susan’s article, “Naval Architect William Francis Gibbs, ‘A Dream Deferred Never Died,’” from the Society’s flagship publication, SEA HISTORY, was selected as the winner of the 2024 Rodney Houghton Award for the best article in SEA HISTORY in the past year.
James van Kuilenburg is the SS United States Conservancy’s new Curatorial Associate. James has worked in museums big and small, archives, and libraries throughout the Mid-Atlantic. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Dickinson College. James is an award-winning researcher, author, and artist. Most recently, his research about circuses in 19th century Pennsylvania culminated in a one-person circus arts show.
