Folk artist Wayne Kusy is internationally acclaimed for his large-scale re-creations of ocean liners, including a 10-foot-long model of the RMS Titanic, a 16-foot-long model of the RMS Lusitania, a 25-foot-long of the RMS Queen Mary, and a 14-foot-long model of the SS America, all constructed entirely out of toothpicks. His works, which can sometimes take years to construct, have been featured in major U.S. publications and TV shows, including People Magazine, Rachel Ray, and ABC’s Good Morning America.
Last year, SS United States enthusiast and Conservancy supporter John Mark contacted Kusy and commissioned the artist to create a three-foot-long model of America’s Flagship, the SS United States. After taking delivery of the model, which was constructed using more than 16,000 toothpicks, John and Wayne recently connected in Philadelphia so the artist could see the ship’s full-size inspiration, and to present the model to the Conservancy.
Dr. Phillip Marion, Administrative & Program Associate, for the SS United States Conservancy, welcomed John and Wayne near the SS United States’ berth at Pier 82 in Philadelphia. He also spoke with both men about their shared love of historic ocean liners, especially the SS United States.
