The Conservancy is pleased to introduce our global community to our newest team member, Dr. Phillip Marion.
Phillip joined the Conservancy as the Administrative & Program Associate, having recently completed his Doctorate in Music Performance, Pedagogy, and Literature from James Madison University. He is a highly trained and acclaimed performer, having given concerts throughout the continental United States and Europe, and he placed highly in several international music competitions. His administrative background prior to joining the Conservancy includes being Assistant Manager for the James Madison University Brass Band, Associate Director for the Nelly Berman School of Music, and department manager for a Philadelphia based title-insurance agency.
We are so excited to have him on our team!
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE SS UNITED STATES CONSERVANCY?
Being a Philadelphia native, I have been aware of the ship’s existence from a young age, seeing it alongside the highway while driving to my Grandma's house in Bucks County. I have been following the Conservancy's events and progress for a few years and finally became formally involved this past summer when I was selected for this exciting role.
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AS THE CONSERVANCY'S ADMINISTRATIVE & PROGRAM ASSOCIATE?
I am the initial point-of-contact for all questions and inquiries about the Conservancy from our supporters and the public. Whether it be making a tax-deductible donation, or helping facilitate a curatorial acquisition, I help coordinate everything behind the scenes so that we continue to operate smoothly and efficiently. Additionally, I am heading the merchandizing team as we expand our variety of offerings to our worldwide network of supporters.
IN YOUR WORK WITH THE CONSERVANCY THUS FAR, WHAT IS MOST INTERESTING TO YOU?
It is so refreshing to speak with our supporters on a daily basis and learn more about their love for the SS United States. Everyone's story is a little different, and we are glad not only to listen to each one individually, but often we’re able to share and promote them through our social media offerings and e-newsletter. The support base for the ship is world-wide and I’m so grateful for the generosity and passion of our international supporters, some of whom immigrated to the United States aboard the Big U.
WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THE CONSERVANCY IN THE FUTURE?
Having started with the Conservancy amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic, I am helping us to navigate through these troubled waters and cannot wait until we are able to offer in-person events once again. I am especially looking forward to advancing our curatorial initiatives, and to supporting the Conservancy’s future museum that will do justice to the SS United States in forever preserving her legacy as the greatest American ocean liner.
