Thank You for Helping Us Celebrate the Big U's 68th Anniversary!

As July draws to a close, we would like to express our gratitude to all who helped make our recent virtual events such a success. Between our Gala 68 Online Auction and our star-studded virtual gala (stream it for free HERE), we were able to raise significant interest, awareness, and funds for the Big U.

Our auction, in particular, was a rousing success — raising more than $13,000 to support our efforts to save the SS United States! We hope to hold more virtual events in the future, including the fourth (and final) round of our Online Auction.

The Conservancy would like to thank the hosts of our Virtual Gala, Mark Perry and David Perry (co-chairs of the Conservancy’s West Coast Chapter) for putting the event together, and the wonderfully talented team at Beyond Pix for producing the event. We were incredibly grateful for the participation of all the celebrities, performers, and other supporters of America’s Flagship who took part in the event, including: Dolly Parton, Mercedes Ellington, Kate Burton, Nancy Sullivan, Bill Miller, Joe Rota, Klea Blackhurst, Nita Whitaker, Skye LaFontaine, Liisi LaFontaine, Akira Sky, Glenn Farrington, Ron Abel, Nick Fryman, and Michael Tekulsky.

We would all like to thank everyone who took part in our Gala 68 Online Auction, including all of the generous individuals and organizations who donated items, experiences, or their services to the cause: David Macaulay, Robert G. Lloyd, Mark Perry, Peter Knego, Bill Miller, Manny Kirchheimer, Kyle Ober, The Steamship Historical Society, and The Pollin Group.

Finally, we would like to extend a warm “thank you” to our supporters. Whether you placed a bid in the auction, watched the Virtual Gala, or simply helped us spread the word on social media, your participation in our July virtual events is deeply appreciated. Stay tuned for more exciting events in the months ahead!

8 June 2020 — Hollywood, CA: The Coronavirus won’t stop the effort to save an enduring symbol of America’s spirit and resilience. On the anniversary of her record-breaking maiden voyage, “America’s Flagship” the SS United States will again serve as a powerful, unifying symbol of American triumph over adversity. On July 3, 2020 (4pm PST / 7pm EST), the nonprofit SS United States Conservancy’s West Coast Chapter (www.ssusc.org) will host its first “virtual gala” in the style of the 1950s classic “Colgate Comedy Hour” variety show, once filmed aboard SS United States. The online gala will be available on the Conservancy’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/VideoSSUSC .

This exciting digital event will feature celebrity appearances by country music legend Dolly Parton and actress Kate Burton (daughter of SS United States one-time passenger Richard Burton), Mercedes Ellington (granddaughter of jazz icon Duke Ellington who once performed aboard the ship), singer-songwriter Akira Sky, singers Nita Whitaker and her daughters Skye and Liisi LaFontaine, a performance of the ship’s rarely performed theme song “First Lady of the Sea” by cabaret sensation Klea Blackhurst, and feats of magic from Glenn Farrington of Magic Castle fame. Donating technical support and sponsorship for the event is Beyond Pix Studios, an internationally recognized leader in broadcast services, headquartered in San Francisco.

“This is what happens when a ship geek with Hollywood connections gets an idea,” said Mark Perry, an Emmy and Golden Globe award winning writer-producer, Conservancy Board Member and founder of the Conservancy’s West Coast Chapter. “The Colgate Comedy Hour of the 1950s was quintessential must-see TV of the era, and once filmed aboard the SS United States. We want to add a little of that mid-century modern sparkle to our preservation and fundraising efforts.”

“Mark and I aren’t related by family, but rather by something much stronger: the family of ship lovers around the world,” said maritime historian and author David Perry, who is co-hosting the gala. “The SS United States is much more than a ship. She is an irreplaceable part of American history and an era when that history represented the very best of human achievement.”The largest and last remaining ocean liner built in America, “The Big U” shattered the transatlantic speed record in both directions on her maiden voyage in 1952. No passenger vessel has ever broken it. She played host to presidents, Hollywood stars and celebrities, tourists, and immigrants in the days before jet air travel, serving as a global ambassador of American promise. The ship was the height of American post-war innovation, technology, and design. Withdrawn from service in 1969, the SS United States has been berthed in Philadelphia since 1996 awaiting renewal.

The SS United States Conservancy prevented the ship from being scrapped in 2011, and today leads a global campaign to save and revitalize the vessel. Raising funds through donations and working to attract private investment, the Conservancy aims to redevelop her into a mixed-use destination and world-class museum. In December of 2019, the Conservancy entered into an agreement with a prominent commercial real estate development firm, RXR Realty, which has been exploring a range of options for the SS United States’ redevelopment.

In addition to live commentary, rare film clips, and interaction with virtual audience members, the online gala will feature an auction of rare items related to the famed ocean liner, including a stunning painting by maritime artist Robert Lloyd and original sketches by famed author-illustrator David Macaulay.

“At this challenging time when we need soaring and unifying symbols more than ever, the SS United States endures as a pinnacle of technological and artistic achievement. She’s a monument to the American can-do spirit,” says Susan Gibbs, President of the SS United States Conservancy and granddaughter of the ship’s designer, William Francis Gibbs.

“As our nation contends with COVID-19 and other challenges, ‘America’s Flagship’ once again conveys a message of hope and resilience. Through the miracle of digital technology and allure of Hollywood glamour, this event will introduce the soaring story of the SS United States to a wider audience.”

The SS United States Diary of Gospel Singer Mahalia Jackson

American gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was among the great number of famous personalities who crossed the Atlantic aboard the SS United States. Although she almost always suffered from seasickness, sailing on the ocean was one of the things she most loved to do. In an excerpt from her personal diary, written aboard the ship between March 30th and April 4th, 1961, Miss Jackson described her journey this way:

"New York, March 30: We took a cab to the United States Lines pier on W. 46th Street to board the SS United States. Loads of friends gathered to see me off. Everything was most exciting, with photographers from New York papers snapping pictures. I was dead tired and soon as the boat pulled out I was in my room and in bed."

Jackson's journal continued:

"SS United States, April 1: After sleeping for two days I came out of my stateroom through the insistence of musical director Meyer Davis who kept calling to me to attend a party for comedian Jackie Gleason. So finally I pulled myself out of bed and mingled with the guests, but within an hour I was back in my room looking out through the window at the beautiful water. I never knew water had such a drawing power on me. It was quite interesting to see the different forms and shapes the water would take, the different waves and colours; the different moods and sounds."

The next day, on April 2, which was Easter Sunday, Ms. Jackson sang aboard “Were You There When They Crucified Our Lord” for the Protestant Service. Two days later, the Big U arrived at Southampton where reporters and interviewers came aboard to interview her, prior to the triumphant concert that took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
