The SS United States’ sumptuous mid-century modern interiors were created by a diverse team of the nation’s artists and craftspeople. Glimpses of their work in the background of ads such as this one subtly spread the belief that American talent was at the cutting-edge of art and design. Here, passengers in the ship’s private restaurant pose in front of a sparkling, back-lit aluminum and crystal wall panel by Charles Lin Tissot. The panel is now in the Conservancy’s permanent collection.
